So, without further ado I present to you Part 1 of 6 of my Bursting with Bloggers Series (clever isn’t it?). Enjoy…

1. What does “reality” mean to you? And what is your reality?

MegaBizFlakesSamuel Ayodele of MegaBizFlakes

To me reality simply means doing or executing the things I’ve being hoping for. Things that I’ve been wanting to start a long time ago. And the moment I take any action in order to make my dream come true, that means I’m transforming my dream into a REALITY. And when I’m living the dream that means my dream is being transformed into a REALITY.

My Reality is building a blog that’s about entrepreneurship and embarking on the entrepreneurship journey.———————————————————————————————————————————————

Reality means wake the hell up and realize that you are in a world of freedom and anything is possible. My reality is simply knowing that I can achieve anything I want and have anything I desire.

To me, reality is two things: the world around me, and my perception of that world. Events are certainly “real” but they are only as real as we perceive them to be.

I don’t use this type of terminology often, but I’m obsessed with having a ton of information and the right type of information. I’m also focused on not distorting information to serve smaller aims like my ego or my immediate desires. In other words, I’m really conscious of rooting out my blind spots and ensuring that I see things as they are.

I believe everyone lives in their own reality – it’s the outside world reflected through one’s own filters. For me I want to create the most awesome reality, first in my mind and then in the outside world. Only when I find the perfect balance between my inner vision and the outer manifestation will I achieve what I was meant to do.

Reality is having a part in the “unexpected turn of events” that life always manages to throw at you. Finding the energy to persist on when everything manages to go wrong and to use what you have to achieve the very things that you want. My reality, is getting on and achieving the things that “I” want to achieve and to be able to have the freedom to take on life’s challenges the way that I want – living my own dream, and not someone else’s.

To me, reality is what you make of it. If you see the world as an indomitable, it will be, whereas if you see it as an endless adventure with loose rules worth bending and incredible heights worth scaling…well, let’s just say I aim for the latter.

Just the plain dry facts, with no interpretation – no projection of meaning on to them.

For example: here are some things that are *not* my reality:  I have to do this email interview. (No I don’t.)  I’m successful. (Subjective projection of categorization.)  I’m working on some new projects. (Not now I’m not. I’m just answering your email.)

My reality right now:  I’m sitting in a chair, typing on my laptop.  It’s Sunday night.  I’m in Singapore, in my apartment.  I’m responding to your questions.

I think about this a lot.  Listen to people talk, and notice how many things they say are just projection of meaning on to neutral facts that have no inherent meaning.

Even life.  What’s the meaning of life?  No matter how you answer that question, you’re just projecting meaning onto something neutral.  It’s like saying, “What’s the meaning of that chair?”  That chair doesn’t have meaning.  It’s just a chair.  Life doesn’t have meaning.  Life is just life.

Perhaps you like life to have meaning, but then just understand that’s poetry – not reality.

Reality to me means being able to live the lifestyle of your creation and not that of others. I believe it to be insane living the same lifestyle that was created for us centuries ago when we can easily create our own.

In my humble opinion, reality can suck it! It’s a subjective term people usually use to limit themselves and justify their excuses for inaction.

I view reality as something that is very flexible and not set in stone. So when I take that definition and look at it from my life’s perspective – I don’t have to work a high stress day job making $60k per year. I can build my own business and earn a comfortable 6 figures a year online.

I don’t have a unique definition of reality. Reality is life. My reality is living with exactly what I need and nothing more (currently that means everything fits in a 32L backpack), traveling the world as I please, and having a good, happy time living.

People have this crazy notion that reality is real. But if you’ve ever changed your mind about anything you know how tenuous our “reality” really is.

———————————————————————————————————————————————–

MurluMurray Lunn of Murlu

Reality, for me, has always been one of those very strange topics that I find myself thinking about. It’s hard to describe my overall mentality to what’s going on in the world because I, quite literally, grew up on the net.

Unlike those which were well into their 20′s and 30′s when the web came about; I was still just 8 years old when I first connected. Since then, now 23 years old, it seems that the world is entirely different than how I hear from others. Maybe it’s because I’ve had such a broad connection with people; I’ve talked to other web users from around the world so instead of having this limited mindset about what’s going on around me, I’ve always thought in a global-sense.

I know all of this sounds really odd but I guess what I’m trying to say is that reality is about those amazing connections we make with people but not just from those in our immediate area – it’s about connecting with everyone in the world. We’re becoming more aware of how we impact each other on a global basis which puts us into a completely different mindset of how to interact (and make an impact) in our lives.

I look at reality in two different ways. The first is the reality that I don’t control. These are things that are outside my influence, but affect my life – things like taxes, gravity, etc. I try my best to accept these things for what they are and work around them where I have to. The second is the reality that I create. This is the act of bringing my imagination to life. If I don’t control every aspect of it, I certainly control most of them and I get to decide how things work. I focus as much of my attention as possible here because I get the most return on my investment. Most importantly, I try hard to make sure that I don’t let the reality that I *don’t * control interfere with the reality that I *do* control.

I have a phenomenological perspective on reality—that it’s different for each of us according to our perceptions. For me, reality is constantly in flux. Sometimes reality seems exciting and full of possibilities; other times it seems bleak and overwhelming.

I suspect that’s true of all of us. What we think, we see! For this reason, I try not to concern myself with defining or judging reality. I focus on what goes on in my head and heart, believing that the world I experience will parallel what’s going on inside me.

———————————————————————————————————————————————–

Upgrade RealityDirk de Bruin of Upgrade Reality

I used to think that reality was what you were born with in life, and that is how your life had to be until the day you die. I’ve learned that reality can be whatever you want it to be. If you work hard enough, persist and never give up when you’re failing time and time again, then you can shape your reality.

Reality is only limited by the beliefs you impose upon yourself. If the Wright Brothers accepted reality to mean that humans could not fly then the airplane may never have been invented.

My reality is that I’m working every day to build the life I want to be living, and I know that it’s just a matter of time before I get to where I want to be.

———————————————————————————————————————————————–

Freestyle MindOscar Del Ben of Freestyle Mind

For me reality is everything that happens in your life that you are conscious about. For example if you are deeply involved in some activity then you are living in your reality but if you’re just doing something to kill boredom then you’re not. I know it sounds a bit confusing but this is what I can think of when I’m asked that question.

My reality? I guess my reality is creating things. I feel real when I’m making something that’s tangible either for me or for others people. For example I like making software and I’m feeling good when I’m creating something that other people will use.

I look at reality as a reminder of how precious time is. A reality to me is where I can strive to pursue my passions and goals in life to ultimately, achieve them. My reality is experimenting and learning with what the web has to offer to achieve greater success. Needless to say, education goes a long way in helping you live a much better life and have all sorts of benefits.

What is this? The Matrix? To me reality means how we perceive and sense our inner and outer worlds. I believe our life stories, experiences and preferences shape what we are able to perceive and feel. This means there’s usually quite a gap between what we’re experiencing and what’s actually happening.

Ultimately we’re all in charge of our own lives and are the only ones that can make it better. I had a really great life – fantastic job, great friends, boyfriend and apartment but I realized I was only 95% happy and for a lot of people that is enough but all I could feel was the missing 5%.

I’m a bit dramatic and make grand gestures so I sold all my stuff, quit my job, broke up with my boyfriend and left to travel. I don’t think everyone needs to do that but I do hope I inspire people to find what’s right for them.

Reality to me is simply accepting the facts at all times. Actually, I’d compare it to ‘stepping on a scale’. Sometimes, especially when we’ve been eating too much, we don’t want to step on a scale and look down so as to see the damage. But when we look—that’s reality.

My reality is simply a knowing of who I am and what I’m capable of. It’s about being honest with myself so as to understand my strengths and weaknesses, but more than anything embracing those strengths—ie ‘genius’ within.

This being said, I see myself as a husband and father of 4 first. That’s my premier mission. My second is to help others through the gift I’ve been given to communicate, be it writing or speaking, on a very high level—thus motivating others to get the most out of themselves and experience true joy, peace, and satisfaction in this life.

Reality is the life you are living when you are totally present in the moment. When you are not, you are living the life of your head, which means you are either stuck in the past,or wandering around in the lands of never-come future.

One important fact to remember is that your reality is of your choosing and it changes constantly.

My reality right now is trying to come to terms with being home after traveling for many years. Our reality is really one of transition. We are deciding on what our next move and home in life will be. We are transitioning from debt to wealth and we are transitioning out of a job and into our desired digital nomad lifestyle.

Reality is fact, truth or one’s circumstances.  Reality for me is being lucky enough to have the opportunity to do what I want to do in life, to take chances.  I have seen a lot since I have traveled through Latin America, and people’s realities are different all around the world.  Each person does not have the same opportunities and cannot control their destiny, therefore it is my duty to be sure to take advantage of the fact that I can control mine.

Reality is what you make it. If you don’t like your story then change it. It’s really that simple. My reality is that I was with a guy for 4-years and on track to get married and start a life. We had a dream of traveling together, but that changed for him. He wanted to settle down and I had to make a difficult choice that life was not worth compromising for a guy. So I left him and I haven’t looked back since. I’ve taken my location independent business that I’ve had for 8-years on the road for an indefinite adventure. I’m starting with a road trip through the United States to skateboard the best skateparks and then heading somewhere overseas. The plan is to not have a plan and open myself to any opportunities that present themselves. My reality is epic.

For me, reality means being brutally honest with myself and others, as well as knowing that I need to discipline myself into working hard now so I can live life to the fullest. With the technology we have these days, it’s completely possible to create a one-man (or woman) enterprise and stream of income with nothing but a computer and an internet connection. It’s reality! Those who choose to ignore it (or be lazy about it) are really missing out.

To me, reality is a state of awareness.  Life and the world around us exist regardless of how we perceive them, so to me, reality is the conscious awareness of what’s real (and what’s not).  My reality is everything I do, my surroundings, and my history.  I don’t think I consider my future (and similarly, goals, dreams, etc.) to be reality, because it hasn’t happened yet, and I don’t know exactly how everything’s going to play out.  I realize I may have taken the world “reality” too literally here…

———————————————————————————————————————————————–

Ending the GrindSteve Roy of Ending The Grind

Reality to me is what we have chosen our lives to look like. When I ask people why they are still working a job they hate and not pursuing their passion, I often hear them say that this is reality. It’s like people think they are trapped in a lousy job or life because that’s how it’s supposed to be. My reality is a long, hard road to success. Four months ago, I decided that after 9 years in the financial services industry, that I had had enough. I told myself (and my wife) that I was going to build a blog, which in time, would support our family. So reality for me right now is one filled with stress and challenges, which will eventually allow me to have complete freedom over my time and schedule.

Reality to me is anything tangible that I can see and touch or that’s within my grasp.  It’s what IS as oppose to what could be.

My reality is what is present in my life at the moment.  I am an entrepreneur living in New York with my husband and two kids.  I run an online business where I work on from my home office. I get up each and every day and write my action plan and goals and I work diligently on them.

Entrepreneur's JourneyYaro Starak of Entrepreneur’s Journey

That’s not a simple question, although I can answer it with a simple response: Reality is what I decide is true for me in any given moment, given the tools of perception I have to work with.

In terms of my conscious thought, truth is only what I focus on and think about in any given moment, so it’s really very linear, I can’t think about two things at once. It constantly changes every time I change focus, so being the master of your choices is the most important aspect if you want control of your results. ——————————————————————————————————————————–

To me, reality is everything that happens now. It’s not only what you do in the present, but it’s how you live to make way for the future. Reality is real; it can’t be fabricated or exaggerated, but it can be planned. You have the power to control your own reality, whether that reality is positive or negative. What you do with the time you have now makes all the difference in how you’ll live the reality of your future.

The key to making your dreams reality is to open the doors of opportunity. You do this by first setting your goals, then by planning the tasks that need to be completed in order to achieve your goals, and lastly by executing each task and taking action. This is my reality now so that I can live a better reality tomorrow. ——————————————————————————————————————————–

When I was a little kid we lived in a small college town named Greeley. My friends and I called it ‘Greality’. This was our way of making Greeley into something other than a small town. And of poking fun at ourselves.

Reality doesn’t have to be what’s obvious. You do not have to accept someone else’s interpretation of reality. It’s negotiable. Reality can be created.

Back then our reality was anything we wanted it to be. As kids, I think we understood the fact that reality isn’t obvious – or even comprehensible.

I’ve never let go of that way of thinking.

Yeah…it took a bit of time, but it was so worth it. Part of the idea of this whole thing was to bring together bloggers from different scopes and expose them to each other’s readers. For instance, I think that many people looking to get into internet marketing might be doing to so to create a lifestyle where they are free to travel. So marketing and travel blogs can live together in harmony lol.

Great initiative on your part Eugene! I think I liked Lori’s answer, from Tiny Buddha, the best but it’s great to see all the diverse opinions and perspectives.

Makes for an interesting conversation that’s for sure!

To me reality is exactly what it sounds like. Reality is what our human mind perceives to be real in our own, individual, lives. Every single person has their own reality and that reality is shaped and influenced by past experiences that linger in our subconscious minds.

When it comes to entrepreneurship, we each have the opportunity to shape our own subconscious minds into what we perceive is real for us in our lives. Your goals can be greatly enhanced or greatly limited by your reality.

    • Eugene
      March 8, 2011 | 2:16 pm

Lori always has an original perspective on things, that’s why I wanted to include her in this. I like where you’re going with this…that reality is really a matter of personal perception. And perception can be changed.

If reality is your perception of something…then it’s not really something set in stone (not very REAL, is it? :) )

They all have different answers. Maybe because we all have different realities. I see reality as something we cannot escape from. It’s reality and illusion and fantasizing can only get you out of it for a short period of time. You will still end up in the reality of this world. One thing to put in mind is the contribution you can make to transform reality into how you want it to be.
